Spread the Word–July 1!

C.H.A.S.E. members and supporters worked hard for years to pass an ordinance to phase out gas-powered leaf blowers in Santa Cruz. We’re in the final stretch before the ordinance takes effect, so please help us get the word out about the ordinance and the date that it begins:  July 1, 2025.

  • Please tell your landscaper, if you hire one, that gas-powered leaf blowers are illegal to use in the city beginning July 1
  • Let them know that battery blowers are not affected by the ban, and that the MBARD LEEP program offers rebates of up to 80% of the purchase price of battery tools and batteries
  • Email or hand them the city’s flyer so they can find more info and share it with others
  • Find Frequently Asked Questions on the City’s Decarbonization Policy webpage

The property owner is responsible for ensuring that gas leaf blowers are not used on their property, and is responsible for any violations, including by landscapers they hire. The city will enforce the ordinance through fines.

Gas-powered leaf blower ban flyer--Santa Cruz

No one wants anyone to be caught unaware, so please help us in spreading the word to other residents and landscapers. The city’s flyer can be shared on social media and in neighborhood groups. Neighbors who aren’t aware of the ordinance might appreciate the notice so they and their landscapers can be ready.

Commercial landscapers can prepare now by researching any battery equipment they need to replace their gas blowers with and planning the purchase. The LEEP program does require an application and approval. If you know a city resident who uses a gas-powered leaf blower, they are eligible for the LEEP rebates through June 2025.

Battery-operated leaf blowers are more profitable to use than gas ones, so accelerating the transition is a win/win for businesses and the health of residents. But if you employ an independent landscaper who may struggle with the initial cost, even with the rebates, there are a few ways you could offer to help. You could:

  • Purchase a battery tool for their use while on your property, or gift them one
  • Pay the landscaper for service one or two months in advance to help them finance the initial cost
  • Invite them to recharge their batteries during their visit
  • Or better yet, ask them to just clear the hard surfaces, with a broom, and leave the leaves around the plants to improve soil health

Remember–no more gas leaf blowers starting July 1. It’s rakes, brooms, or battery power!

Thank you for helping make Santa Cruz a healthier place to live and work!
